A year of bikes, buds, learnings, and adventures.
Hailey's 2023 Trail Moments
I consistently have mixed feelings at the beginning of each year. While it's exciting to see what lies ahead, those blank pages also bring anxiety. What if I don't make the most of them? Generally, the anxiety is short lived as I get back into the swing of things post-holiday season and of course, get back on the trails.
Bikes always have a funny way of grounding. Sometimes through humility and other times, driving a sense of presence. 2023 was full of these moments. Too many to count now that I look back.

I started off the year with shooting Kaz's Tacoma for a Pistons & Pivots article. It seems we had more snow in the valley last year which always makes for a fun 4x4 mission. We headed out into the Soo, an area near Whistler for some fun driving and photo taking.

The infamous June-uary. Conditions in Squamish were prime. This typically happens for a few weeks and then it's the return of second winter.

A favourite from a January shoot with Claire Buchar and Katrina Strand.

Finished the month off with a trip to the Sunshine Coast for a photo shoot with Pete and Deniz. We went to one of my favourite trails in Sechelt called Sniper. It's short, sweet and has some fun moments. It's also the perfect after-dinner laps from my parents house.

I logged 60 days skiing last season and a lot of it was in the late winter months. Still managed to sneak away from being a powder hound to shoot Micayla for a Troy Lee project. Ollie and I had so much fun with the piece and were honoured to capture Micayla's art studio as well as her riding.

The cold and the trail conditions are always challenging variables at this time of year but the shadows and soft light make up for it.

March saw another trip to the Sunshine Coast. Forrest Riesco getting lit up by the late winter light.

A sneak peek from last April.

First camping trip of the season. We all made our way to Della Creek. There was a bit of snow but the riding was surprisingly great.

A good camping trip isn't complete with out a full light set up while making dinner. Kaz never fails to make something gourmet.

I headed into the interior for a sneaky Chromag shoot. This one isn't out yet, so stay tuned!

March saw another NSMB project, this time taking us to the Vancouver Island to sample the local riding with Nolan Riding. Missed the video? Watch it here!

Another exciting Chromag shoot. This one was for the Chromag Chronicles and featured Jinya, an incredible member of the Chromag team and hardtail rider. It was wild to watch Jinya ride features on his hardtail that I would double take on my full suspension bike.

The only way you truly know where the snow line is, is to get out and see for yourself. We went into the Chilcotins, braved hiking through the snow and pouring rain but it was still a trip for the books.

The good ol' Chromag Show 'n' Shine. Kick's off the summer season and also gets most of Whistler and beyond out to celebrate bikes.

I was so stoked to get in as a Wild Card into Crankworx Deep Summer. This event is always an incredible opportunity to spend quality time doing what you love and this year was my second time doing it as a photographer. 72 hours with your camera in hand will have you dreaming in f-stops but you come out of it a level up in skill.

A selfie from Deep Summer.

After a bit of reminding from Kaz, I submitted a few photos to Redbull Illume. I was so stoked to find out that this image of my dear friend Denis Courchesne made it in as a finalist in the Energy catagory. This image is very special as the feature was rebuilt by all my best friends for Deep Summer. Not only that, it was very hard to hit but Denis and all his bike wizardry, pulled it off.

From Darkhorse to Hangtime, August was the month of events.

Shooting the Darkhorse Invitational was an incredible highlight of 2023.

Getting to see the women of free ride send it is inspiring and a hell of a lot of fun.

A project up in Prince George brought some new trails and dirt skiing.

And from up north, it was down south to Merritt for more new trails and a rodeo. This trip for Toyota was everything I live for - new trails, friends, camping and trucks.

If you haven't ridden Merritt yet, put it on your bucket-list.

The end of fall is always bitter sweet. We were lucky to get one one last trip into the Chilcotins before the snow fell. Seeing the forest fire destruction was gut-wrenching to say the least but the community was warm, welcoming, and looking forward.

November was spent primarily in Chile for a freeride event. Read all about the trip and the event at Roca Bike Park here.

Cold? What cold? A few of us Whistler folk thought hey, no snow, no problem, we will go to Vancouver Island. We still encountered snow plus rain, and 27 other mishaps. Despite that, it was one last adventure to satisfy our souls before the holiday season.
Seeing 2023 all laid out, it was truly full of bikes. I can't wait to see what 2024 brings and all the two-wheeled adventures.

Great pictures. I predict the "reflections" picture from July (Crankworx?) is going to be a screensaver for a lot of people.
Thank you.

Thank you so much. That image is one of my favourites to date. It was incredible to be up for sunrise with all my best friends, another perk of that particular competition.

Thanks for all the outstanding photos Hailey. It not only shows us how epic this sport is, but is a reminder at this time of year to look back at our smart phone photos to take in what kind of year we've had. It can get lost in the day to day goings on, that we've all most likely had some epic times out there on our bikes. Happy New Year everyone.

Great photos all around. That first Micayla Gatto pic and the October pic with the tree are works of art. Thanks.

Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. We were sitting on a dock in the Chilcotins and looked up to see the one tree illuminated. It was a moment for sure.
